No ignition
Failed hot-surface igniter, dirty flame sensor, or a control board lockout after repeated failed light attempts.
Las Vegas winters are short, which is exactly why furnaces here fail the first cold night after sitting idle for eight months. We repair, tune, and replace gas furnaces and heat pumps — with combustion and carbon monoxide checks on every visit.
Failed hot-surface igniter, dirty flame sensor, or a control board lockout after repeated failed light attempts.
Overheating from restricted airflow, a failing limit switch, or a blower motor that is not moving design CFM.
Blower running without a burner call, a dead gas valve, a tripped pressure switch, or a thermostat wired or configured wrong.
Reversing valve faults, defrost board failures, low charge, or auxiliary heat strips that never energize.
Cracked heat exchangers, flue and venting problems, and CO readings — inspected and reported honestly, in writing.
Bearing whine, belt squeal, rattling ductwork, and burning odors traced to the actual cause rather than guessed at.
In colder climates, heating equipment runs most of the year and problems surface gradually. In Las Vegas the furnace sits untouched from March to November in an attic that reaches 150°, collecting dust and letting components dry out and corrode. Then the first genuinely cold night arrives, thousands of systems in the valley call for heat at once, and the failures all appear on the same weekend — which is also when every HVAC company in town is suddenly booked.
The failures themselves are mostly small and cheap when caught early. Igniters have a finite number of cycles and give out at startup. Flame sensors coat with oxide and cause the burner to light and then shut off after a few seconds. Pressure switches trip because of a partially blocked flue or condensate line. Blower capacitors weaken so the motor drags, which trips the high limit and locks the board out. All of these are quick fixes on a scheduled fall visit and miserable emergencies on the coldest night of the year.
The safety case is the stronger argument. A gas furnace is the only appliance in a typical valley home capable of producing carbon monoxide, and the conditions that lead there — a cracked heat exchanger, a compromised flue, poor combustion air — are invisible without an inspection. Our heating visits include a heat exchanger inspection and a combustion and CO check, and if we find something, you get the reading and the photograph, not a vague warning attached to a replacement quote.
Heat pumps deserve more attention here than they get. Their efficiency drops as outdoor temperatures fall, which is why they were historically dismissed in cold regions — but Las Vegas winters sit almost entirely in the range where a heat pump is at its most efficient. One system covers both seasons, there is no gas line or flue to maintain, and modern inverter-driven units modulate rather than blasting on and off.
They do fail differently, and diagnosing them takes different habits: reversing valve faults, defrost board and sensor problems, and auxiliary heat strips that quietly carry the load while the compressor circuit does nothing. That last one is expensive and invisible — the house stays warm while resistance heat runs your bill up. We check that the heat pump is actually heating rather than just delivering warm air.
For homes with a healthy gas furnace, we are equally happy to keep it. Replacing serviceable equipment for the sake of a conversion is not something we recommend, and a fall tune-up on a good furnace is a far better use of your money.
You get the diagnosis explained plainly, the flat repair price before work starts, and a one-year labor warranty on the fix. If replacement is the honest answer, we quote furnace and heat pump options side by side with real installed pricing and the payback math, and financing is available.
